Rushville is a charming little village located in the heart of the Finger Lakes, straddling the county line of Ontario and Yates, lying within the boundaries of both the Towns of Gorham and Potter. It is home to approximately 680 people and over a dozen businesses that operate year round. Rushville was first settled in the summer of 1790 by Elias Gilbert. At that time, the area was commonly known as Federal Hollow and was mostly occupied by Native Americans of the Seneca Nation. The second family to settle in “Federal Hollow” was Nathan Loomis, who was the father of Judge Chester Loomis. What now operates as the Village Hall, the Loomis Memorial Hall was dedicated in Chester’s honor. Loomis was a great scholar and politician, active in both local and State government.
