I am pleased to welcome you to the Town of Poughkeepsie website. We hope you find this site both user friendly and informative.

The Town is nestled in the majestic Hudson Valley and is home to 45,000 residents. Our Town is rich with culture and steeped in history. The Town is honored to be the home of such prestigious institutions as Vassar and Marist Colleges as well as our own well respected Dutchess Community College. Along with these institutes of higher learning, we are also proud to have Locust Grove, the former home of Samuel Morse. Our twenty-two parks offer recreational activities for everyone including hiking and walking trails in our newest and highly esteemed Peach Hill Park. Fine dining is abundant, while art exhibits, festivals, fairs and farmer markets are bountiful.

“Poughkeepsie” derives its name from a spring where Indians once gathered to weave lodges from the cattail reeds. These Native Americans called their meeting place “Uppuqui” (oo-poo-kee) meaning “lodge-covered”, plus “ipis” meaning “little water”, plus “ing” meaning “place”, all of which translated to “the reed-covered lodge by the little water place”, or “Uppuqui-ipis-ing”. This later evolved into “Apokeepsing”, then into “Poughkeepsing” and finally, “Poughkeepsie”.

Town government is comprised of a Town Supervisor and Six Councilpersons, one representing each a ward in the Town. All Town Board members are elected for a term of two years. Town Board meetings are held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month and the Committee of the Whole meeting (non-voting meeting) is held on the second Wednesday of every month. Meeting times are at 7:00 pm in the Town Hall meeting room located at One Overocker Road. All meetings are open to the public and residents are always provided with an opportunity to address the Town Board.
