With easy access to highways and the three major New York area airports as well as the growing Westchester County Airport, commuting to and from New Rochelle is easier than ever. The New Rochelle train station houses both the Metro-North railroad line and the regional Amtrak line providing access to Boston, New York and Washington, D.C. The express train to Grand Central cuts commutes to 30 minutes. Inside the train station, a beautiful mural brings New Rochelle's history alive, from the native Siwanoy and founding Huguenots to the famous artists, actors, and innovators who called our City home. The adjacent Transit Center accommodates local buses and the beautifully-designed garage holds 900 parking spaces as well as the “Tapestry of New Rochelle”, a large public art project.
New Rochelle is on the verge of unprecedented economic growth. The City has selected a Master Developer, RDRXR, for the redevelopment of the downtown that will begin with a signature project at the western gateway. Almost monthly, new restaurants spring to life, offering international cuisine replicating that of our nearby neighbor, New York City. New Rochelle’s economic resurgence is evident in small businesses as well, with our Business Development program assisting entrepreneurs every step of the way.
Also notable are the institutional resources New Rochelle has to offer. The Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital , located in the City’s center, is a 242-bed, community-based teaching hospital offering primary, acute and emergency care. With an award-winning public school system, prominent private schools and three prestigious colleges- The College of New Rochelle, Iona College, and Monroe College. New Rochelle upholds the value and importance of education in residents' lives. The award-winning City School District of New Rochelle offers a comprehensive educational program for over 11,000 students. New Rochelle High School is home to the Museum of Arts and Culture, the only Regents-chartered museum hosted in a school in New York, providing both an on-site experience for students and a cultural asset for the entire community school district.
Our dynamic library, one of the best-equipped and busiest in the county, offers a myriad of activities and events for residents of all ages. The New Rochelle Public Library is one of the best-equipped and busiest libraries in the 38-member Westchester Library System, and as a cultural hub offers a myriad of activities and events for children, adults and seniors. The adjoining Ruby Dee Park at Library Green, beautifully landscaped, offers a haven for both work and play and houses New Rochelle's historic "Walk of Fame".
The park regularly hosts family-friendly special events and seasonal festivals and in the summertime, weekly concerts and outdoor movies hosted by a vibrant Business Improvement District. In addition, the Huguenot Children’s Library, the only free-standing children's library in Westchester County, is bordered by the city’s beautiful twin lakes at Huguenot Park and Jack’s Friendship Garden- a playground for children of all ages and abilities.
Arts and entertainment abound in New Rochelle. The Library's Ossie Davis Theatre and New Rochelle High School’s state-of-the-art Linda E. Kelly Theater and Museum of Arts and Culture offer ongoing music and arts programs, enriching the community. And with 38 recreational facilities including parks, lakes, nature areas, playgrounds, hiking trails and a municipal marina, New Rochelle’s Department of Parks and Recreation provides year-round activities.
New Rochelle’s population of nearly 80,000 is housed in a mosaic of diverse neighborhoods, each with its own distinguishing characteristics including elegant, stately older homes, some dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries; exquisite architecture; and lovely landscaping. Nestled in the central part of the city is the largest designated Historic District in Westchester County. In the downtown, residential towers join with live/work lofts and turn-of-the-century apartment buildings as well as multi-and single-family homes. Along the waterfront, one-of-a-kind homes ring the shoreline.
New Rochelle's waterfront is also abundantly blessed with both unsurpassed beauty and public accessibility. In addition to a number of popular beach clubs, three City and one County park claim a good portion of the 9 mile coastline, offering passive and active recreational opportunities. The 20-acre Echo Bay area in the city’s East End is currently in the planning stage for a dynamic new waterfront development featuring residences, shops, restaurants, and open space.
