History of New Hempstead
The land on which New Hempstead is found was originally part of the Hackyack or Kakiat Patent in what was then Orange County. The patent was granted by King William III to Daniel Honan and Michael Hawdon on June 25, 1696. The area was considered part of the Town of Haverstraw until March 18, 1791, when it was given the name of New Hempstead, reflecting the fact that the majority of inhabitants had come from Hempstead, Queens County. The first town meeting was held on the first Tuesday in April at the house of Theunis Cooper (Kuyper or Cuyper). Copper was the son of Captain Cornelius Cooper, one of the original settlers of the area known as North Moiety of the Kakiat Patent.
