Town Supervisor, New Castle Drug Free Communities Support Program (DFC) grant
I am very happy to report that New Castle received a Drug Free Communities Support Program (DFC) grant. New Castle United for Youth, a subgroup of Coalition for Youth, will receive $125,000 in DFC funds annually for five years to involve and engage the local community. I would like to thank the Coalition for Youth – including our town representatives Town Administrator Jill Shapiro, Comptroller Rob Deary, Police Chief Charles Ferry – as well as Superintendent Lyn McKay, Lea Barth, Victoria Goodman & Leslie Kuhn for their efforts in securing this grant. This new funding will us allow the coalition to work with parents, agencies, schools, businesses, faith groups, civic groups to increase awareness, advocate for our youth, provide resources to support alcohol and drug free youth, help place more young people on the path toward success and enable them to live healthier and safer lives.
Back to School Safety
As the school year begins, now is a good time to remind everyone about bus safety. Studies show that motorists all over the state and throughout the country are passing school buses when their stop signs are already out. It is a problem that needs to be addressed for the sake of our children,. I was very happy to hear that Senator Terrence Murphy is sponsoring legislation that will put cameras on school bus stop signs to detect and record vehicles illegally passing or overtaking a school bus.
09/11 Ceremony
New Castle marked the fifteenth anniversary of 9-11 with memorial service, honoring and remembering all those affected and the thousands who lost their lives, including three New Castle residents. We paid tribute to the immediate response and contributions from our first responders and New Castle residents on that day and in the days the followed. I would like to thank the Millwood Fire Company for co-sponsoring the reception after our service. I would also like to thank Bob Coulombe, Town Administrator Jill Shapiro & her assistant, Ciara Gannon, for putting together a great program.
