Town of Meredith, NY Website
Meredith is a rural township of quiet beauty situated in north-central Delaware County in the western foothills of the Catskill Mountains. It contains three tiny population centers-the hamlets of East Meredith, Meridale and Meredith (usually known as Meredith Square)-but it consists mostly of countryside with dirt roads, rolling hills, woods and open fields.
In area, Meredith covers 58.3 square miles. According to the 2010 census, there were 1,529 inhabitants living in 816 housing units.
Since the town’s incorporation in 1800, agriculture has dominated its economy. For many decades, dairy farming-with its national showcase in Meridale Farms-was the primary occupation. In recent years, as the number of dairy farms declined, other forms of agriculture, including grass-fed livestock, have taken root. Home-based and Internet-dependent businesses also have proliferated.
A wide variety of residents call Meredith home. Some have lived here all their lives. Others, attracted by the town’s pastoral character, have migrated from more populous places such as the New York City metropolitan area to maintain second homes or settle here.
Residents find in Meredith an array of institutions and organizations that meet various needs for religion, service, cultural stimulation and social gathering.
